Arguably, painting trim is one of the most difficult and time consuming tasks of painting. Here are some tips to help you make you DIY work look perfectly professional.
Tape Off at the Floor to Protect
Tape off at the wall too if you are only painting your trim.
Sand and Prime Trim
Who likes to sand? Any hands? Yeah, me neither, but, oh boy, can I appreciate a nice smooth finish on things! Sand first.
Primer, besides the obvious advantage of keeping dark wood and/or stains from showing through your lovely new paint, it also help the paint adhere to the surface.
Use an Angled Brush While Painting and Priming
Try a 2" brush for traditional trim.
Angled Paint Brush
Also, many prefer adding a line of caulk (smoother with either a finger or proper tool) before priming or after painting (if you're trim is white). This gives a visually-pleasing, smooth transition from trim to wall.
For painting the wall around the trim, a "cutting in" technique can be used very effectively. YoungHouseLove offers a fun and concise video tutorial for this here.
